The Nutty Professor: A Review

TheNuttyProfessorDirected By: Tom Shadyac
Starring: Eddie Murphy, Jada Pinkett-Smith
Status: Released

In this wildly entertaining remake of the Jerry Lewis classic, Eddie Murphy plays Sherman Klump, a brilliant, kind and calorically-challenged genetic professor. After he meets a new member of the faculty (Jada Pinkett-Smith), Sherman becomes desperate to reduce his 500 pound figure down to size and win her heart. So after taking his experimental serum, Sherman becomes Buddy Love, a Super Pumped and fast talking Don Juan. After he starts to interfere with Sherman’s life, it’s man against creation in an explosive showdown of wills. HUGELY entertaining

This is one of my all-time favourite Eddie Murphy films, he plays 7 roles total:

  • Lance Perkins (A Richard Simmons Like Motivational Trainer)
  • Sherman Klump (The Movie’s Protagonist)
  • Buddy Love (Sherman’s Buff Alter-Ego)
  • Kletus Klump (Sherman’s Dad)
  • Mama Klump (Sherman’s Mom)
  • Ernie Klump Sr. (Sherman’s Brother)
  • Granny Klump (Sherman’s Aging Grandmother)

It’s really funny and the writing keeps it fresh, Tom Shadyac was smart to retain Jerry Lewis as a creative consultant as he brought insight into his earlier performance of the character in the 60’s while making it more modern. The Humour is evident throughout definitely a must see for all those hankering for a great and funny comedy.
