1987 was a huge year for action movies but when it’s classic comedies nothing compares to the original Lethal Weapon which defined the buddy cop genre and spawned a wave of likeminded films in the years to follow.
For those of you entering the squad room a little late, here is a quick refresher:
Lethal Weapon was an action film directed by Richard Donner starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh respectively. Murtaugh was a by the rules cop who was also a devoted family man. Riggs was a vietnam veteran who is constantly having suicidal thoughts after the death of his wife. This comically mismatched duo is then paired to solve a huge case. Their separate but equally important ways to getting the job done was what drove the movie as it progressed from the first meeting to the climax. The film was a huge success and spawned 3 sequels and a television series spinoff
The cast reunited on Good Morning America to reminisce about the film’s longevity and why it has remained so popular through the years:
